Ng Shi Xuan on Land Transport and Related Matters (No. 2) Bill

08:52 Min

As Singapore strengthens battery safety requirements for active mobility devices, it should not have to choose between a safe market and an open market, said MP Ng Shi Xuan. He raised the concern of independent battery makers potentially being shut out of the replacement market - effectively creating an oligopoly within original equipment manufacturer supply chains, reducing consumer choice and likely raising costs. Mr Ng said independent manufacturers must be able to access the necessary testing and certification. He suggested developing local capabilities which would lower the cost and time needed for compliance, while keeping to Singapore’s high safety standards. He spoke in parliament on Wednesday (Oct 7).
