NDR 2026: Social media platforms to have stronger safeguards built in for young users, says PM Wong

One in six young people aged 10 to 24 in Singapore show signs of problematic social media use, said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in his National Day Rally speech on Sunday (Aug 23).

Social media platforms will be required to put in place “robust and reliable” age checks and stronger safeguards for young users amid concerns over problematic social media use, he said.

If a platform’s safeguards for young users remain inadequate, Singapore will consider additional restrictions – including raising the minimum age for access to that platform beyond 13, PM Wong said.
