Motion: Christopher de Souza on government response to political salaries review
Singapore has chosen to remunerate its ministers transparently and sufficiently, so that they are not incentivised to seek gifts, outside interests or lucrative post-political opportunities. This “clean wage” model protects their independence and ensures their decisions are made solely in Singaporeans’ interests. MP Christopher de Souza said this in parliament on Thursday (Sep 10). He said the workload of MPs has increased “exponentially” over the past 15 years, partly due to their being much more accessible to constituents through social media and online platforms. Demands on ministers and other political office holders have risen even further, he added, as policymaking has become increasingly multifaceted, multi-jurisdictional and multidimensional. Mr de Souza said the political salaries review and the government’s statements on the issue show a willingness to put “courage, conviction and principle” ahead of political expediency.
