04:57 Min

Speaking in parliament on Tuesday (Nov 3), MP Lee Hong Chuang said that an update to the Ministry of Trade and Industry’s name to include “Energy” is a statement of priority and reflects an understanding that energy costs and related issues are crucial for small and medium enterprises (SMEs). He suggested that energy issues currently under different regulatory agencies be consolidated under one agency to make it seamless for SMEs. He pointed out that it is important for SMEs to understand contractual agreements on fixed price safeguards on electricity prices, and suggested a concise contract guide for SMEs be produced and translated into Mandarin, Malay and Tamil. He further asked for the government’s long term plans to help SMEs build energy resilience and reduce their reliance on assistance.
