China’s matcha boom: How the green tea is becoming a new economic driver

China wants to become a global matcha powerhouse, scaling up production while building demand at home. In Guizhou province, a major matcha hub, homegrown machinery is helping producers expand and the powdered green tea is finding its way into everything from noodles to dumplings. China is on track to produce nearly 70% of the world's matcha this year — with output expected to reach 18,000 tonnes, up from about 12,000 tonnes last year. Tan Si Hui reports.
