Jakarta airport suspends flights due to Mount Anak Krakatau ash
Mount Anak Krakatau has been erupting since Friday (Sep 4), sending volcanic ash as high as 15,000m and forcing eight airports in Indonesia to suspend flight operations.
At Jakarta’s Soekarno-Hatta International Airport, hundreds of passengers were stranded after flight operations were suspended. More than 900 flights at the airport have been affected.
Singapore Airlines, Scoot, Malaysia Airlines, AirAsia and Lion Air Group were among carriers that cancelled flights. Across eight airports, more than 1,500 flights and 170,000 passengers were affected.
Volcanic ash also blanketed cars and roadsides in Bandar Lampung. Residents were advised to wear masks and eye protection, reduce outdoor activities and stay indoors where possible.
Schools cancelled activities after students and residents suffered eye irritation, while fishermen called off fishing trips. Jakarta and Lampung ordered remote learning from Monday over health concerns.
