Self-taught drummer Er Chow Kiat recently set a Guinness World Record with 233 spin-and-strike drumbeats in one minute.

Mr Er first picked up the drums at 14 while struggling at school. Through music, he found purpose and direction. At home, he spent hours teaching himself and learning songs by ear.

After studying at LASALLE, Mr Er earned a full scholarship to the Musicians Institute in Los Angeles, beating competitors from around the world.

He later performed on cruise ships across the Caribbean and Europe before returning to Singapore to pursue a career in music, performing with artistes such as JJ Lin and Angela Zhang.

He founded a drum school in 2016, which began with 30 students in his parents' home. Today, it has 20 staff members and five outlets across Singapore.

Mr Er hopes his journey inspires others to pursue their passions and keep trying, no matter the setbacks. "I really love music, but (I never thought) that I could convince myself to pursue a career in it. Drums and music saved my life."
