SINGAPORE: A fire broke out on a luxury yacht at ONE15 Marina Sentosa Cove on Sunday morning (Jun 7), sending thick black smoke into the air and drawing the attention of residents and guests in the area.
Flames engulfed parts of the vessel, identified as Eagle Wings III, a 112ft superyacht berthed at the marina. According to yacht charter listings, the vessel can accommodate up to 50 guests and is used for private charters and events.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said it was alerted to a fire at 11 Cove Drive at about 8.10am.
"The fire involved a yacht which was fully engulfed," SCDF said in a Facebook post shortly after 12pm.
SCDF said land-based resources arrived within seven minutes and immediately deployed a water jet from a pontoon to fight the fire.
During the initial firefighting effort, the yacht drifted away from its berth. An SCDF Rapid Response Marine Vessel was also deployed as part of the firefighting operation.
The fire is now under control and firefighters are continuing to apply water and damp down the yacht, SCDF said. No injuries were reported.
In a note to members seen by CNA, ONE15 Marina Sentosa Cove said smoke was detected from a vessel berthed at the marina at about 8am on Sunday.
The marina said its on-site emergency response team was activated and the Singapore Civil Defence Force was notified. SCDF subsequently began firefighting operations and remained at the scene managing the incident.
"There are no reported injuries at this time, and we are working with the authorities to bring the situation under control," the marina said, adding that members should avoid the affected area.
As of 1.40pm, the burnt-out hull of the vessel sat largely submerged, with oil booms laid near it.
Gerold Soh, 21, and Chloe Tan, 21, who were staying at the adjoining ONE15 hotel, told CNA they noticed the smoke shortly after leaving their room on Sunday morning.
The couple had been planning to go for a swim in the pool when they saw the plume of smoke rising from the marina.
"We came out of the room and we saw a lot of smoke," said Mr Soh.
CNA contacted One15 Marina Sentosa Cove and Eagle Wings Yacht Charters for more information. Both declined to comment.
